Using The Bibles Advice to Prevent Your Marriage Ending in Divorce
Firstly if you are considering Christian marriage counseling then I must commend you. So often people fall into a cycle of despair as their relationship crumbles, wanting desperately to prevent divorce and yet taking no action to stop it from happening.
You on the other hand have admitted there is a problem and are actively searching for a solution. I hope my site can help get your Christian marriage back on track and provide some of the support and advice you require.
I believe part of the problem lies in the belief that shared faith alone will get your through your marriage crisis. Unfortunately the statistics say otherwise.
The divorce rate for Christian marriages is higher than for secular marriages. As much as our belief in Our Lord can provide us with much needed solace, faith it seems does not necessarily provide us with the tools we require, when our Christian Marriage starts to fail.
Of course the Bible is filled with practical advice for our marriage; it’s learning to apply that advice in a modern context that is the challenge.
For instance:
- Anger management – Proverbs 29:11 “Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back”
- Conflict resolution – Ephesians 4:26-27 “don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you. Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil”
- God’s ideals for husbands and wives – Ephesians 5:33 “So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband”
- “You shall not commit adultery” the seventh Commandment
Probably the most relevant of all is the need for counseling when your Christian Marriage is failing – Proverbs 15:22 “Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.”
There is no shame in seeking marriage counseling; in fact the scriptures instruct us to do so.
The next question then is how best to obtain this counseling. Well the best method for choosing a counselor is via referral. Unfortunately due to the intensely personal nature of marriage counseling, few people are willing to admit they are undergoing counseling, so you may find it difficult getting a referral from your peers.
If you are unable to get a referral then you are faced with finding a counselor in your area either via the phonebook or the Internet. The downside to this method is of course it may some time to find the best counselor for you and of course counseling can work out to be pretty expensive.
